Smallman - Questions from a Business Life - 2026

Over the last five years people increasingly said things like, “I recognised that,” or “I’ve seen that exact thing happen,” after reading Making Sense of Business which told me the stories themselves weren’t the point. A pattern emerged across countries and sectors; the conversations shifted. Fewer requests for stories, but more questions about what sat behind them — why sensible organisations make avoidable decisions, why leadership gets softer as processes get thicker, and why business feels more complicated while judgement seems to get thinner.
Those questions didn’t arrive neatly, and they didn’t arrive in order. They surfaced in meetings, mentoring sessions, and late-night conversations when the slides were packed away and someone finally asked what they really wanted to know.
Those questions, working on the same format as before, have formed the bedrock of this handbook and its accompanying thoughts.

Smallman – Making Sense of Business - 2021

A decade ago when this small handbook was first suggested I was still travelling extensively on business as well as hosting my own business radio show based in the UK. Smallman on Business.
As I talked to guests on the show and other business folks whilst travelling I realized that people were interested in the stories and thoughts I had gathered from working with folks around the World.
As I'm I am not academic I have recorded those stories and thoughts in simple language and into this simple handbook. With space for readers to make their own comments and reminders. The stories and thoughts maybe obvious, but are often forgotten, or they express a known idea in a different way that could be more relevant to your current situation.
Every reader won't get something out of each and every one of the stories or thoughts, but I do believe that everyone will find something here which resonates and that can be put to good effect in your business as you to travel on Life’s Highway.

Proud to be a Business Student Mentor in 2 countries

Over the years I’ve had the privilege of talking to students in various parts of the world about my life and business experiences and this led me to become a Mentor in 2024, for the Talent Development Programme run by CEPAR at the University of Southampton Business School. I help students, taking part in the Universities Business Challenge (UBC). And provide advise at Talent Development events.

In the last few years, I have worked with several different Teams who have had success in the UBC in both the undergraduate and post graduate competitions, including winning the undergraduate prize in 2025 (first time Southampton had achieved this honour) and have recently mentored a post graduate Team to the Final for 2026.

The CEPAR (Careers, Employability, Placements, & Alumni Relations) department is unique to Southampton Business School at the University of Southampton and is designed to enhance the employability of their students.
